Skiing in for beginners in Meribel
Meribel is a great resort for first-time skiers and snowboarders. Beginner skiers will have everything they need to become competent enough to then explore the world’s best ski resort.
Key points for beginners:

  • There are two designated beginner areas
  • There are some world-class ski schools in Meribel
  • There are 8 green runs (green runs are the easiest) in Meribel
  • There are 25 blue runs (a bit more difficult than green runs) in Meribel
  • There are 6 free ski lifts for beginners to practice on
  • There is an excellent free bus service in Meribel
Meribel has two designated beginner areas, one around the Altiport and one in Meribel Mottaret. The Altiport area can be accessed either by the  Rhodos lift or the free resort bus (if you haven’t purchased a lift pass). Here you will find the Altiport drag lift from which you can access a number of wide green pistes that are ideal for beginners. Once you are feeling comfortable and have purchased a lift pass you can use the altiport chairlift and ski the different green runs around the beginner area, this is where you ski instructor will take you on your first lesson.

In 2016 the resort invested heavily in Mottaret, literally reshaping the mountain to create a new beginner area. From the midpoint of the combes chairlift, beginners can enjoy the Yeti Park and Little Himalaya runs.

Once you have mastered the green runs there are plenty of lovely blue runs to enjoy. We would recommend the Foan piste from the top of Tougnette 2. This is on the opposite side of the mountain to the Alpiport and the views are stunning. The Foan piste itself is nice and flowy and you can pick up the green Perdrix piste into the centre of Mottaret.

Ultimately if you are a beginner you should always book lessons with a professional instructor, they will help improve your technique, increase the amount of fun you have and most importantly keep you safe. The main ski school meeting points are at La Chaudanne in Meribel Centre and in the centre of Mottaret. Prices for group lessons are around €200 for five two-hour lessons.
